Prince Charles Infuriates Villagers

Britain's Prince Charles has infuriated residents of a quiet Somerset village after it was revealed he is considering concreting over green fields.

Villagers in Newton St Loe, near Bath, England, have accused the future king of undermining his credibility as his investment group the Duchy of Cornwall - which bankrolls his lifestyle - wants to build 2,000 homes on rolling pasture and an environmentally friendly beef farm.

It is hard to believe that you would endorse the destruction of this beautiful area and see this unique, thriving village reduced to a suburb of Bath.

The duchy has appointed consultants and is working on the plans with Bath and North East Somerset council, which is seeking sites on which to extend Bath to meet government housing targets.

But many tenants have sent letters to Charles in protest at the proposed plans.

They said: "It is hard to believe that you would endorse the destruction of this beautiful area and see this unique, thriving village reduced to a suburb of Bath."

Jane Giddins, the chairwoman of the parish council, told Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper: "There are people in the village who feel let down by the duchy's position. They could have said this plan to extend Bath on green field sites is wrong."

A spokeswoman for the duchy said: "We are keen to work alongside the council to meet its housing needs and the needs of the community. As usual the duchy will ensure the development is sustainable and the views of the local residents will be taken into account."
