Britain's Prince Charles was presented with local produce on a low-key visit to a Welsh town.

The Prince of Wales toured Llandeilo alone and was given a freshly-produced string of pork sausages packed in ice from local butcher JH Cooper Ltd and also received an apple from Paul Davis, 60, who was exhibiting rare varieties of apple on one of several stalls at the town's Civic Centre.

Paul said: "He liked the look of the Pitmaston Pineapple which is very fruity and, as its name suggests, has a pineapple-like flavour. I said 'take one if you want' and he put it in his pocket to eat later."

The prince also visited Abaca Organic, the only organic mattress-maker in the UK registered with the Soil Association, with the company admitting they hope Charles will allow them to buy organic wool from his own sheep stock at his Welsh farmhouse near Llandovery.

Rhiannon Rowley, company MD, said "At the moment things are going very well and we're growing by 25 per cent despite the recession.

"We opened a conversation on the subject of organic wool and that is what I was hoping to do at this point. It would be wonderful to get it from the prince's flock."

The prince later went on to visit the village of Cwmdu, where he drank half a pint of local Evan Evans beer at a pub, toured the village shop, and met the village quiz team.

He was serenaded with hymns by school children as he toured the village chapel, and also looked at a number of Ntional Trust-owned holiday cottages before ending his visit by officially opening the newly-renovated Llandovery police station.
