The Prince of Wales - who spoke to British broadcaster Fiona Bruce for her documentary, 'In Victoria: A Royal Love Story' - claims he was 14 when he started to develop an understanding of the importance of the paintings around his home.
He said: "Growing up in those houses it's like Windsor you know, you rush up and down corridors mucking about as small children, never really noticing the surroundings much.
"And I've never forgotten suddenly, I think it must have been about the age of about fourteen, and I suddenly started to notice the paintings. I can't tell you how wonderful it was, that moment."

The prince also showed off the Royal art collection in the documentary, which was shot to mark the opening of a major exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace.
He said: "Six million people went to see that exhibition in 1851. Six million people! How did they get there for a start? Presumably the railways were beginning to become more effective but even so, it was truly remarkable and obviously had a major impact generally so the people could see what was happening and what was available and where things were going and so on, but I think it was an incredibly bold venture."
The show airs on UK TV this Sunday (14.03.10).
