Britain's Prince Edward arrived at the Paralympics closing ceremony in a second-hand carriage last night (09.09.12).

The Earl of Wessex was transported into the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London, in a chauffeur-driven vehicle made out of old motors welded together and surrounded by fire and smoke as part of a spectacular parade of machines that resembled something out of Mel Gibson's 1979 dystopian action movie 'Mad Max'.

Edward's carriage was followed by war hero Captain Luke Sinnott - who lost his legs and an arm at battle in Helmand, Afghanistan, in 2010 - at the spectacle, which saw Coldplay perform a 15-song set and also featured performances by Rihanna and US rapper Jay-Z.

The prince has been gripped by Paralympics fever and was joined by his wife, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, at a Paralympic Ball at the Grosvenor House Hotel last week to raise money for the British Paralympic Association and the International Paralympic Committee's Agitos Foundation, which is trying to increase the sporting opportunities for people with disabilities.

The couple - who are due to embark on their Diamond Jubilee tour of Canada tomorrow (11.09.12) - enjoyed a number of events throughout the Paralympics including cycling at the velodrome arena in the Olympic Park, Stratford.

Other royals to have attended Paralympic events this month include Prince Harry - who watched Great Britain's women's goalball team storm to victory against Denmark - and Duchess Catherine, who presented a gold medal to British discus thrower Aled Davies.
