Britain's Prince Edward distracted himself from his possible RSPCA investigation by going on a two-hour horse ride with his sister Princess Anne yesterday (01.01.09).

The 44-year-old royal - who allegedly hitting his gun dog with a walking stick - chatted with his 58-year-old sibling as they rode around the royal family's 20,000-acre Norfolk estate Sandringham.

The pair appeared to enjoy their leisurely morning until a photographer greeted them with "Good morning", to which Anne replied, "It was until we saw you".

While the royals enjoyed their horse ride, staff at Sandringham trained four black Labradors, two of which were involved in the alleged incident last Saturday (27.12.08).

A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "They had whistles and were sending the dogs off to fetch things and do various exercises. It was as if they were giving them extra training to avoid any repeat of the incident on Saturday when two of the dogs were squabbling over a dead bird."

Edward caused outrage after he was photographed during the pheasant shoot last weekend. In the shots, he appeared to be using his 4ft walking stick to separate two canines fighting over a dead bird.

However, it is unclear whether the prince actually hit the dogs or merely threatened them.
