Britain's Prince Edward opened a community centre in Cornwall yesterday (01.10.09).

The Earl of Wessex unveiled a commemorative plaque at the new facility at Truro's Trelander estate in south west England, branding the building a "fantastic achievement".

He said: "You have got behind this, and driven this, and seen this through, and gone through all the highs and lows of being able to secure the funding for it. So well done and make the most of it."

Residents have been campaigning for a centre for young people and local groups to use for more than 50 years.

The finished facility - which is powered by solar panels - features a crèche and a hall.

It was designed by locals, who also helped build it.

Peter Congdon, chairman of the Trelander and St Clements Community Association, said: "We got together in groups and decided what we wanted and designed that. The architects were given that and they worked around it."

The community is already working on the next phase of the centre, which includes a small sports hall with grandstand seating for 100 people.

It is due to by completed in March 2010.

Edward also visited nearby Truro College to open its new art and design building.
