Britain's Prince Harry may be returning to the front line in Afghanistan.
The prince - who has made no secret of his desire to return to the country since he spent ten weeks fighting on the ground in late 2007 - has reportedly signed up to fly a £30 million attack helicopter which, if he is chosen as pilot, would send him back into combat.
It was previously thought that the third-in-line to the throne would not be able to return to Afghanistan as it would be impossible to keep his presence a secret, but military sources now believe there is a high chance that his wish will be granted.
shaping up to be a superb helicopter pilot
Harry, 25, is currently training with the Army Air Corp at RAF Barkston Heath in Lincolnshire, and is said to be "shaping up to be a superb helicopter pilot".
A source said: "Flying the new 9A is his wish and if it is approved the only duty he can perform is flying on combat in Afghanistan."
An official announcement is expected to be made early next week on his future.
An Army spokesman added: "Lt. Harry Wales could fly Apache or Lynx helicopters if he successfully completes the Army Pilots Course. Which aircraft he flies will depend on his progress, manning requirements and his preferences."
