The wife of Netherlands' Prince Johan Friso has quit her job to care for him.

The 43-year-old royal continues to be in a critical condition following a skiing accident in Austria in February, and his wife Princess Mabel has now quit human rights group The Elders to focus on his full-time care.

Chairman of The Elders Archbishop Desmond Tutu said: "Mabel has earned the respect and affection of The Elders and of everyone she has met and worked with around the world.

"We share her sorrow and heartache at this terrible time. She and Friso and their daughters, will always be in our hearts and prayers."

Johan's brain starved of oxygen when he was buried in an avalanche for 15 minutes and he is still being treated at London's Wellington Hospital.

Queen Beatrix - Johan's mother - has also been spending her spare time flying to the British capital to attend to her son's needs at the medical facility in North West London.

Prince Johan and Princess Mabel have both been living in London, with their daughters Luana, seven and Zaria, six, for several years.
