Britain's Prince Philip has given £1.6 million to the Help for Heroes charity.
The royal presented the impressive cheque, raised during the Help for Heroes ball in London in September, to the organisation's founder Bryn Parry at London's Buckingham Palace last night (01.12.08).
Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, also spoke to Royal Marine Peter Dunning, 23, who lost both his legs while serving in Afghanistan.
The prince gave special thanks to businessman Jimi Heselden, who bid £1.5 million in the auction at the ball.
Heselden paid the staggering sum for him and eight friends to fly with the Royal Air Force aerobatic team the Red Arrows. Originally there was only one seat available for the unique flying trip, but the British Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sir Glenn Torpey, agreed to offer additional places after the bidding topped £200,000.
Help for Heroes helps rehabilitate wounded servicemen and women injured in the current conflicts.
The charity is raising funds for a hydrotherapy swimming pool at Surrey's Headley Court military rehabilitation centre.
