Britain's Prince Philip handed out special Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards to nine air cadets yesterday (10.12.08).
The group, from Northwich, Cheshire, travelled to St. James' Palace in London to receive the coveted prizes after previously being bestowed with the silver and bronze honours.
Receiving the honours were David Barden, Stephen Boswell, Lucy Fletcher, Matthew Foxley and Charlotte Kenney, all 17, and 18 year olds Laura Bullen, Sophie Higginbottom, Thomas Keene and Christopher Powell.
The cadets, who have all been with the 146 Northwich Squadron for at least two years, chatted to the 87-year-old prince - also known as the Duke of Edinburgh - before being handed certificates by former Great Britain Rugby League captain Paul Sculthorpe.
To receive the gold award, the participants had to undertake voluntary work, improve in an area of physical activity and boost skills, take part in the planning and participation of an expedition and undertake a residential trip doing a shared activity away from family.
The awards are open to anyone aged between 14 and 25.
A pilot scheme for the accolades was started, with the prince as chairman, in 1956. At first only boys were allowed to take part, but in 1958 a scheme allowing girls to take part was launched.
The X Factor might be the bane of some folks’ lives thanks to a certain pair of twins who keep appearing on the show week after week, but as we’re trying to determine who we’d most like to go on a hot date with this morning, we thought we’d open the floodgates to your views.
