Britain's Prince Philip arrived in Northern Ireland for a series of public engagements yesterday (24.02.10).

The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in the territory to congratulate 100 young people who had successfully completed the gold level of his scheme, the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards.

Philip presented the awards with Formula 1 racing driver Eddie Irvine and meet recipients and family members, along with volunteers and leaders.

It's been an amazing four years, and I'm happy everything we've got to do, and this year was definitely my favourite.

A recipient of the gold award, Yi Quan - who has also completed the bronze and silver levels of the same scheme - told the BBC: "It's been an amazing four years, and I'm happy everything we've got to do, and this year was definitely my favourite."

To complete the Duke Of Edinburgh award scheme, citizens have to undertake activities which involve working to help others in the community, improving their personal physical fitness, developing existing skills or trying something new as well as planning and completing a trek, and staying and working away from home, as part of a team.

The prince later visited the Belfast Activity Centre (BAC), which aims to engage young people aged 14-25 in a range of adventure learning and outdoor programmes and activities and to advance their personal and social development.

The prince had previously unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening of a boathouse built in 2009.
