Britain's Prince William has promised girlfriend Kate Middleton he won't start his tour of New Zealand until after her birthday.

The future king - who has missed his beau's past two birthdays due to other commitments - has insisted his official visit to the Southern Hemisphere will only begin after Kate turns 28 on January 9.

A source said: "William is really thrilled that he will be here to celebrate. Kate is delighted too, especially as he missed her last birthday because he was at RAF Cranwell and the one before that because he was at Sandhurst."

William is now due to fly to New Zealand on January 17 for the official visit.

He will then go on to Australia two days later for an unofficial trip to Sydney and Melbourne, funded by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.

William - son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana - was keen to visit both New Zealand and Australia as he hasn't been there since he accompanied his parents when he was a baby.

The source added: "It was William who suggested the trip. He hasn't been Down Under since he was nine months old."
