The young royal - the daughter of Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako - had been absent from Tokyo's prestigious Gakushuin school since March 1, after suffering from stomach aches and anxiety attacks which were thought to have been brought on by bullying.

It is thought the eight-year-old's symptoms were induced by the actions of a rowdy group of boys in her class, which had caused the Imperial Palace to intervene.

Accompanied by her mother Masako, Aiko went to the fourth period of her morning classes, before leaving the school early.

Her mother also suffers from a form of depression which is why she has remained largely out of the public eye for the past few years.

Masako's depression was thought to have been brought on by the stress of royal life and the pressure to produce a male heir.
