Britain's Princess Anne opened two new facilities in Bristol yesterday (12.10.09).

The 59-year-old royal began her official duties by opening the £61 million Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) - even though the medical centre in the South West of England has been treating patients since May.

John Savage, Chair of the BHI Trust's Board of Governors, said: "We are delighted and honoured that the Princess Royal opened our flagship building."

Head of Division, Doctor Peter Wilde, revealed before the royal's visit: "The BHI is a centre of excellence and I am delighted that her royal highness is able to come to Bristol and meet many of our dedicated staff.

"We will show her innovative and world leading treatments, some developed in our own research facilities, and she will see first-hand the 21st century care we provide to patients in this state of the art facility."

The princess then travelled to Hartcliffe to open the new Bridge Learning Centre.

The £36 million facility boasts a primary school, secondary school and learning centre for teenagers and adults.

The venture is also environmentally aware, with rainwater being collected and used to flush toilets.

Princess Anne spent her lunchtime at the Centre for Deaf People.
