Britain's Queen Elizabeth shocked theatre-goers by slipping into the theatre just before the show started.

The monarch and husband Prince Philip apologised to fellow audience members as they squeezed past to get to their public seats.

The royal couple had turned up unannounced at the West End's New London Theatre to watch the award-winning show 'War Horse'.

She often goes but doesn't like a fuss.

According to theatre-goers, they appeared to enjoy the play - performed by actors and life-sized puppets - about the bond between a young World War I soldier and his horse.

One told Britain's The Lady magazine: "The queen and the duke sat down as the lights dimmed and it was a huge shock when people realised who they were.

"They were incredibly apologetic for asking people to let them past and there was no hubbub or fuss about it all."

The royals - who were last spotted at the theatre incognito at 'Billy Elliot' in 2006 - were applauded at the interval and again when they left.

The queen, wearing a simple green dress, responded with a wave.

A royal source said: "She often goes but doesn't like a fuss."
