Britain's Queen Elizabeth has left Bermuda after praising the island's progress.

The 83-year-old monarch - who made the brief official visit with the Duke of Edinburgh - spoke out at a state dinner held in her honour and vowed to continue supporting the territory.

She told guests: "One thing is certain: the United Kingdom will continue to follow and support Bermuda's progress to the very best of her ability.

"After 400 years of common experience, we can be confident in placing our faith in Bermuda's future whatever it may hold."

Elizabeth and Prince Philip travelled to the Caribbean island earlier this week, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Bermuda's settlement by the British.

The royal's comments - to guests including Foreign Secretary David Miliband and the Premier of Bermuda, Ewart Brown - have confirmed Elizabeth plans to retain close ties with the island, even if it becomes independent.

Bermuda's current government is known to want to end its connections with the UK.

Elizabeth will now travel to Trinidad and Tobago for the biennial Commonwealth Government Meeting (CHOGM), where world leaders will discuss economic and political issues.
