Britain's Queen Elizabeth will officially name the new Queen Elizabeth cruise liner - known as the successor to the QE2 - at a special ceremony in Southampton.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth is to officially name the new Queen Elizabeth cruise liner.

The monarch has agreed to attend the naming ceremony in Southampton in October before the £400million boat makes its 13-night maiden cruise to the Canary Islands.

The new ship is being launched two years after the famous QE2 was taken out of service as a passenger liner, and will be the third Cunard ship to bear the monarch's name.

The naming of a Cunard Queen is a very special occasion and this will be an historic event in the true sense of the word. We are both honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name our new liner.

The royal also launched the line's Queen Elizabeth II in 1967, and named Cunard's current flagship liner, Queen Mary II, in 2004.

She was also present in 1938 when her mother launched the first Queen Elizabeth liner.

Peter Shanks, president and managing director of Cunard said: "The naming of a Cunard Queen is a very special occasion and this will be an historic event in the true sense of the word. We are both honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name our new liner."

The 90,000-tonne vessel can hold 2,092 passengers and was built at the famous Italian Fincantieri shipyard.
