Madonna's new film will reportedly launch a scathing attack on Britain's late Queen Mother.
The movie will examine the relationship between King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, who he abdicated the throne to marry.
The royal family disapproved strongly of the union between the couple, and insiders say the Queen Mother - wife of George VI, Edward's brother, who succeeded him on the throne - is to be portrayed in a negative light.
It is a vicious hit job on the Queen Mother. If there is an evil person in Madonna's film, it is the Queen Mother, who is shown as hating Mrs. Simpson.
A source told the Daily Mail newspaper: "It is a vicious hit job on the Queen Mother. If there is an evil person in Madonna's film, it is the Queen Mother, who is shown as hating Mrs. Simpson."
The film is said to be very sympathetic to the twice-divorced Simpson, who was widely rumoured to have become Edward's mistress while still married and to have exercised extraordinary control over the king.
In a further controversy, the film reportedly suggests the Queen Mother plotted with her father-in-law King George V so she and George VI could take over the throne on his death.
This is in direct contrast to historical reports, which say that - although King George was personally in favour of George assuming the throne rather than Edward - there was never any plot by the Queen Mother or her husband to make a bid for power.
