Spain's Queen Sofia has cancelled a visit to Malta due to ill health.
The monarch's husband, King Juan Carlos, has been forced to visit the island nation alone after Sofia was stricken by an unknown illness, though palace staff have been quick to stress she is not suffering from swine flu.
The king was greeted by President George Abela and other MPs, diplomats and dignitaries at the airport, where he was given a national salute by the Guard of Honour.
He later attended a state concert and dinner where Honorary membership of the National Order of Merit in the Grade of Companion of Honour with Collar was conferred upon him by the President.
During the brief visit, Juan Carlos was also scheduled to attend a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph in Floriana, before meeting with Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat at the Grand Hotel Excelsio and then the Prime Minister at Castille, followed by a reception and a visit to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta.
