Rain Ruins Royal Garden Party

Queen Elizabeth's first garden party of the year was ruined by torrential rain.

People at the event held at London's Buckingham Palace were sent fleeing to marquees after 14mm of rain fell in 10 minutes yesterday (07.07.09).

Retired teacher Eileen Dawes said: "We were right in front of the queue for the afternoon tea when the first storm hit but got caught out in the open for the second - it was incredible. It even flooded part of one of the marquees serving tea.

We were told by one of the ushers that it hasn't rained in years but I think today has shown what can happen.

"But it hasn't spoiled the day we saw the queen and we have enjoyed being at the palace. It was brilliant."

As well as the rain, huge hailstones fell, covering the lawn like snow.

Palace staff handed out raincoats, but most guests were still soaked by the deluge.

Eileen added: "It was raining before the queen arrived but as soon as she appeared the sun came out.

"We were told by one of the ushers that it hasn't rained in years but I think today has shown what can happen."
