Britain's Princess Beatrice dumped her controversial boyfriend yesterday (22.03.06), after he narrowly escaped a jail sentence.
Paolo Liuzzo - an American socialite - was convicted of assault and battery two years ago for his part in a violent fight which left a teenage student dead.
He has been on probation since the incident, but breached the order by going skiing in Europe with the princess and her parents. The 24-year-old faced up to two-and-a-half years in jail for the breach.
But an American judge saved Liuzzo from a spell in prison, choosing instead to extend his three years probation by six months. Under his strict new restrictions Liuzzo is also banned from returning to live in Britain.
After the court case, a spokesman for Beatrice's mother, the Duchess of York, confirmed the pair are no longer an item.
He is quoted in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper as saying: "They are not going out any more. So there is no comment from the Duchess regarding this court case."
A friend of Liuzzo also confirmed the relationship is over, saying: "He has been back in the States for a month and hasn't seen her."
When the pair's relationship was revealed last month, Liuzzo said he determined to make things work. He said at the time: "What happened was a terrible accident and not a day goes by without me being haunted by it.
"I've been given a second chance with Beatrice and I'm not going to blow it."
