Queen Beatrix is being asked to offer a royal pardon to thousands of asylum seekers who are due to be deported from The Netherlands. The monarch has been asked to make the "royal gesture" after more than 200,000 people signed a petition demanding the monarch allow 26,000 failed asylum seekers to stay in the country, according to the BBC.The petition was handed in on Thursday morning (28.04.05) ahead of Beatrix's silver jubilee celebrations this weekend, which mark her 25 years on the throne. But the appeal is being seen as more a symbolic protest because it is illegal for a constitutional monarch to overrule government policy. The campaigners, including several national celebrities, claim that many of the asylum seekers have become fully integrated into Dutch society and are being sent back to unsafe or war-torn countries where their lives would be under threat.0Comments | Be the first to comment!
