Royal News Denmark's Queen Margrethe II and her son have set off on a joint dog sleigh expedition to north eastern Greenland.The Danish monarch and her son, Crown Prince Frederik, began their journey yesterday (27.04.05) to celebrate the queen's forthcoming 65th birthday.The couple, more used to lavish palace surroundings, will sleep in primitive hunting shacks, throughout the trip which is believed to last a few days.Royal spokesperson, Lis Frederiksen said the monarch had been looking forward to the since writing about her intentions in a recent book. She said: "The queen has always wanted to go on an expedition like the one she's on now."Crown Prince Frederik planned the excursion as a gift after his mother revealed she was jealous of his trips in a recently published book where she insisted she was also "crazy enough to survive a similar experience". She wrote to her son after he completed a similar trip five years ago: "I envy you in a way." Heir to the throne Frederik, whose wife is expecting the couple's first baby later this year, has already made a string of trips to Greenland, which is partly governed by Denmark.In 2000, he spent four months travelling over 3000 kilometres across the region to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sirius patrol, which has protected the Danish territory for more than 50 years.

His wife, 33-year-old Princess Mary, was due to take part in the latest royal expedition, but was forced to pull out after announcing her pregnancy on Monday (25.04.05).
