Dutch Queen Beatrix celebrated her silver jubilee at the weekend. The 67-year-old monarch, who ascended the throne in 1980, marked her 25th anniversary, by attending a concert in The Hague and a royal walkabout around the town of Scheveningen, before presiding over a meeting of government ministers in the nation's historic Knight's Hall.Across the Netherlands well-wishers held street parties to celebrate the popular monarch's anniversary, with over a million people believed to have made the journey to the capital, Amsterdam.Meanwhile, a recent poll has suggested a huge majority of Dutch people believe the Queen is doing a good job as head of state. The poll, for Dutch De Telegraaf newspaper revealed that 90 per cent of people supported the work the queen did, showing a clear line of support for the royal family. In a TV interview last Thursday (28.04.05) to coincide with her 25th anniversary celebrations, the queen put her enduring popularity down to her modern approach to ruling. She said: "I represent an institution that is by definition more traditional."But still, you see the changes around you and you try to remain alert the whole time, try to remain open to it, if the monarchy needs to adjust."
But the Queen has not always endured such strong support from her subjects after coronation became the scene of protests about the poor quality housing provisions.
The queen also drew criticism for her choice of German fiancé - which enraged those who had lived through Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II.
