Britain's Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson is unlikely to recover her stolen laptop, after police shelved a probe into the theft.

The duchess was reportedly devastated when the laptop - containing hundreds of intimate family pictures - was stolen during a break-in at a photographic studio in southern England in December.

Police launched an investigation into the burglary last month, but were forced to call it off yesterday (13.01.09). Officers reportedly told the duchess's security team they didn't have enough evidence to continue the probe.

They are personal images taken by the duchess and she desperately wants them back

The laptop contained precious family photographs of Sarah's daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and ex-husband Prince Andrew.

A source said at the time of the theft: "The laptop contains pictures of her family and friends as well as snaps taken on her recent travels. They are personal images taken by the duchess and she desperately wants them back."

It is understood Sarah, a keen photographer, had entrusted the laptop to an aide, who left it at the studio so the pictures could be developed.

The source added: "The photographs are of a sensitive nature so she can't just take them along to her local shop to be printed. It's just a dreadful coincidence that the laptop was there when the premises were robbed."
