Britain's Duchess of York has signed a deal for her children's books to be turned into movies.

Sarah Ferguson - who has been dogged by reports she is in financial trouble - has sold the rights to six stories for preschoolers in a deal potentially worth millions.

She said: "A major US film company has just bought up rights to my series of pre-school children's books. Films will run as a series. I cannot yet tell you the name of the film company.

"I cannot tell you how exciting that is for me. America has been so good to me. I failed in Britain, and when I gave it a go in America I was ready to fail there, too - but they have really embraced me."

Five of the duchess' books feature a character called Little Red and are aimed at four-eight year olds, while the other story, 'Tea For Ruby' follows an accident-prone red-haired girl who struggles to be ready on time for tea with the queen and is aimed towards a younger audience.

I cannot tell you how exciting that is for me. America has been so good to me. I failed in Britain, and when I gave it a go in America I was ready to fail there, too - but they have really embraced me.

All six stories have been best-sellers in America.

The film deal is not the only new venture Sarah has coming up.

Speaking at a Jaeger-LeCoultre party in Venice, she told Britain's Daily Mail newspaper: "I have the film 'Young Victoria' which is very exciting right now because we had US distribution. I am also a reporter on a US TV show and there are other projects on the go."

Sarah's previous venture into writing for children saw her 'Budgie the Helicopter' series become best-sellers and made into an animated TV series.
