Luxembourg's Countess Stephanie de Lannoy unexpectedly lost her mother on Sunday (26.08.12).

The Countess - who is to marry Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg in two months - has been devastated by the news of losing her mother, Countess Alix de Lannoy, at 70 to a stroke.

A statement released by the royal family read: "Their Royal Highnesses Prince Guillaume, the Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess and the whole family join in the pain of the Count de Lannoy and his beloved family with our sincere and deepest regret."

Countess Alix had eight children - four boys and four girls, of which Stephanie is the youngest - with her husband, Count Philippe, whom she married in 1965.

The sad news comes just after Belgium born Stephanie and Guillaume spent time cheering on their nation's athletes at the Olympic Games in London. They were joined at some events by Guillaume's doting parents Grand Duke Henri and his elegant Cuban-born wife Maria Theresa.

Despite the tragic loss, the Luxembourg royal wedding is set to go ahead as planned on October 20th.
