Britain's Zara Phillips was a "brat" as a child, her father has claimed.

Captain Mark Phillips - who was married to Princess Anne from 1973 to 1992 - claims his son Peter was "very well-behaved" compared to his daughter, who he described as a "difficult" child.

He said: "[Peter] was a very well-behaved little boy, he wasn't much trouble at all. He knew where the line was and he didn't cross it.

"Zara on the other hand, who came along four years later, was much more difficult, much more of a brat. I don't think she accepted that line at all."

Mark admits he was not a particularly great father when his children were younger and only really enjoyed them when they could talk.

He added in an interview the Sunday Times magazine: "I was never good with small children. Once Peter and Zara could walk and talk, and be useful, I could relate to them much more."

Zara will be taking part in the Olympics in London next month as an equestrian - like her mother Princess Anne did at the Montreal Games in 1976 - but she will be missing out on the opening ceremony as she will be busy training.

She explained: "I would rather get on with my competition than go to the opening ceremony."
