The 89-year-old royal is set to mark the milestone birthday with a four-day celebration at Windsor Castle next May and is releasing 25,000 tickets so the public can join in too.

Simon Brooks-Ward, the producer and director of the Queen's birthday celebrations, said: "We've been working hard to make this a most unique birthday celebration.

"We're especially delighted with our plans to offer an extra 5,000 people the chance to be part of the celebrations through our balloted system for tickets on The Long Walk. This will take place in the New Year."

It is expected that tickets to the event - which start at £55 each - will sell out quickly. For a truly VIP experience, a fee of £165 guarantees you a space next to the royal enclosure and allows access to a hospitality lounge.

The birthday celebrations will feature a number of performances from dancers and musicians, with over 1,500 people and 900 horses already secured for the spectacular.

The Queen's official birthday will be marked in June with the traditional street party in The Mall, Trooping the Colour and the thanksgiving service at St. Paul's Cathedral.
