Britain's Duchess Catherine has thanked Australia for the warm welcome she and Prince George have received.

The 32-year-old royal gave a speech during a trip to the Bear Cottage, a children's hospice, in Sydney where she thanked fans for accepting her and her nine-month-old son into the country.

According to the Express newspaper, she said: "To be here together as a family has been very special and we will always remember it with fond and happy memories.

"Thank you for inviting us here and for such a generous welcome.

"It's really wonderful to be here today - having the chance to meet you all and to see the incredible work of Bear Cottage.

"First class delivery of children's palliative care is life changing. When families are confronted with the shattering news that their children have a life-limiting condition, their world can fall apart. It is at those times that professional support is imperative."

Duchess Catherine - known as Kate Middleton before she married in 2011 - was joined by her husband Prince William on the trip, but the pair were split up to tour different parts of the hospice, before going on to enjoy afternoon tea.
