Britain's Duchess of Cambridge has been told to "rest frequently" while she battles severe morning sickness.

The 32-year-old royal, who is expecting her second child with husband Prince William, has been advised to take it easy at Kensington Palace in London as she tries to overcome the pregnancy symptom.

A Palace source told PEOPLE: "[Catherine] is able to be up and about but needs to be resting frequently."

The Duchess, who also has 14-month-old Prince George with William, has been forced to pull out of a number of royal engagements since announcing her baby news earlier this month.

Catherine had planned to carry out her first official solo tour of Malta last weekend but the Prince, 32, was asked to stand in for his wife after she was encouraged to stay under the watchful eyes of doctors in London.

William apologised for his wife's absence and was handed lots of gifts from well-wishers to pass onto her.

He said during his trip to Malta to celebrate the country's 50th Independence Day: "Catherine has asked me to say how very sorry she is that she couldn't be the one to pass on The Queen's greetings to you all.

"She was looking forward to coming here, and I know she hopes very much that she will be able to visit in the future."

She was also wasn't allowed to attend the Invictus Games alongside her husband, her brother-in-law Prince Harry and father-in-law Prince Charles in London earlier this month due to the nasty sickness.

The couple are set to welcome their second child into the world early next year.
