Earl of Wessex

Earl of Wessex

Britain's Earl of Wessex paid a visit St. Patrick's grave in Northern Ireland yesterday (23.09.14).

The 50-year-old royal travelled to Downpatrick, County Down, as part of his two-day trip and stopped by the site where the patron saint's remains are buried.

The prince - the son of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip - admired the granite stone that marks the burial spot and signed the visitors' book at Down Cathedral.

He then had lunch with tourism chiefs and members of the community at the St Patrick's Centre, before calling into the Downpatrick & County Down Railway Museum.

Edward was then given the task of unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the official opening of the carriage viewing gallery, before jumping on a restored steam train to Inch Abbey.

The Earl also attended a special event in the Belfast Education and Library Board's Headquarters and was given the chance to meet members of staff involved in delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Joint Award Initiative programmes.

He then went on to carry out his final engagement of the day at the Belfast Harbour Commissioners' Offices to celebrate the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Joint Award Initiative Leaders and present Bronze awards to recipients who had completed the programme.
