Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco

Prince Albert of Monaco has completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

The 56-year-old royal - who is expecting his first child with wife Princess Charlene - has joined in with the craze, which involves people filming themselves having ice cold water poured over their heads before donating to charity.

The Prince undertook the challenge while standing on a balcony showing off the lavish backdrop of Monte Carlo's coastline and the Monaco Royal Palace later posted the video on Facebook.

After thanking Eddie Jordan, founder and owner of Jordan Grand Prix and former rugby star Brian O'Discroll for nominating him, he said: "I'm very honoured and happy to be a part of this extraordinary project and I would be happy to make a personal donation to this."

Albert then went on to nominate the French president Francois Hollande, Prince Haakon of Norway and Philip Knight before emptying the freezing cold contests of his bucket over his own head.

And, just as he managed to utter the word "wonderful" as he shook off the ice-cold water, a further two buckets were then emptied over his head.

While the charity stunt is thought to have originated in support of raising money for research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - also known as Lou Gehrig's disease or motor neurone disease - many other charities have also received a rise in donations.
