The 67-year-old royal was at Daneway Banks nature reserve in Gloucestershire, south west England, when the mishap occurred as he was pulling the sheet away from the commemorative object.

In a short speech before the unveiling, he said: "We owe, in so many ways, the Wildlife Trust and all these organisations who battle away a huge amount and for that I could not be more grateful.

"Nothing would give me more pleasure than to unveil this plaque ... I'm wondering what on earth it's going to say... "

Charles - who is patron of Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust - then tugged at the white sheet only for the whole plaque, which was to commemorate his visit, to fall onto the floor.

Fortunately, TV presenter Ellie Harrison, who is president of the trust, came to the rescue and picked up the plaque before putting it back on its stand.

The Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust previously purchased the nature reserve - which is full of endangered insects, including a rare type of large blue butterfly, and plants - to save it.
