Britain's Prince William and Duchess Catherine intend to name their new baby after Princess Diana, according to royal biographer Andrew Morton.

Speculation is rife about the name of the couple's second baby, but according to Morton - who wrote a biography of the Princess of Wales, which explored her strained royal relationships - a daughter would be given the name Elizabeth Diana Windsor.

He told The Sun on Sunday newspaper: "Close friends to William and Kate have told me that if it is a girl they want to name the baby after Diana.

"They discussed girls' names before George was born and now they're hoping the next one is a girl so they can carry out their wish to honour William's mother.

"They're not too thrilled at the thought it will be shortened to Princess Di. But it won't change their minds."

What's more, the biographer explained that other members of the royal family would be furious if the new baby was christened Diana Elizabeth, due to the alleged hostility between Diana and the rest of the monarchy.

Duchess Catherine, 32, and Prince William, also 32, announced they were expecting their second child earlier this month.
