A purple crushed velvet frock worn by the late royal, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Paris, France, in 1997, during an official visit to Lisbon, Portugal, in February 1987 went under the hammer at the KerryTaylor Auctions in London along with two other gowns on Monday (12.12.16) afternoon.

The long-sleeved off-the-shoulder item was undoubtedly the most popular piece as it had bids flying in from all over the place - even online at thesaleroom.com.

The other two dresses - a Caroline Charles tartan woollen frock worn by the princess at the Braemar Highland Games in September 1982 and a Catherine Walker turquoise silk gown she sported in Gisborne, New Zealand, during a royal tour in April 1983 - fetched much lower prices of £6,875 and £5,250.

Anu Menon, director of thesaleroom.com told the Express newspaper: "Diana is the ultimate icon and she is known for her impeccable style and love of fashion."

This isn't the first time the purple dress, which is complete with a trained overskirt, inner skirt and a front slit showing just a hint of flesh, has gone to auction as it also was put up in June 1997 to raise money for charity.
