Queen Elizabeth and Duchess Catherine

Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Duchess Catherine will open the new Barnardo's head office today (10.12.13).

The royals will visit Barkingside in Ilford, Redbridge, which is near London, to support the children's charity as it opens its new building.

The monarch and her granddaughter-in-law will be given a tour of the new offices and unveil a plaque to mark the building's opening.

Queen Elizabeth is a patron of Barnardo's - which was established in 1866 and helps care for young, vulnerable children - while her daughter-in-law, Duchess Camilla, is the charity's president.

The 87-year-old monarch last visited the Redbridge area in March 2012 while she was travelling the country on her Diamond Jubilee tour.

The queen recently opted not to travel to South Africa for the memorial service and funeral of the late Nelson Mandela as she has been advised against long-haul flights due to her age and various ailments.

Prince Charles is expected to attend in her place on behalf of the royal family.

The South African leader's memorial service takes place today in Johannesburg, while his funeral takes place on Sunday (15.12.13) in the small village of Qunu.
