Britain's Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla commemorated the 70th anniversary of D-Day today (06.06.14).

The royals took part in special ceremonies to remember the 1944 landings - during which the Allied forces invaded Nazi-occupied Europe in an event that helped end World War II - in France.

Queen Elizabeth, 88, joined French president Francois Hollande and US president Barack Obama at a veterans' ceremony in Bayeux, Normandy, where the monarch laid a wreath at the Bayeux War Cemetery.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla attended a Royal British Legion service at Bayeux Cathedral, which was led by the Right Reverend Nigel McCullouch.

During a speech earlier in the day, Mr. Hollande said: "This day, which began in chaos and fire, would end in blood and tears, tears and pain, tears and joy at the end of 24 hours that changed the world and forever marked Normandy."

He also hailed everyone who took part in D-Day as a "hero".
