Sarah Ferguson - the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, Duke of York - penned the letter to Susan Barrantes, who left her at the age of eight to live in Argentina, where she was killed in a car accident in 1998.

In the heartfelt passage, the 55-year-old writer says she forgives her mum for leaving to live with her second husband Hector Barrantes, and wishes she was still alive to talk to.

She wrote: "It has been 17 years since you departed on your last drive from the farm in Argentina.

"There is not a day that doesn't go by when I wish I could pick up the telephone and tell you what I have been doing."

In the letter - which has been written for Lisa Erspamer's book 'A Letter to My Mom', which is being released to celebrate Mother's Day in the US - she also gushes about her daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who she says remind her of her mother.

She continues: "To tell you how your granddaughters have excelled and shine.

"They continually remind me of your magnetic energy and the humility with which you lived your life for 62 years."

Sarah - who divorced Prince Andrew in 1996 after 10 years of marriage - added she still loves her mother, despite the fact she left when she was so young.

She wrote: "I look back now and thank you, forgive you, and love you more. You gave me the strength to look at life differently. I am convinced I would never be the strong person I am inwardly had I not had to come to terms with the sense of abandonment."
