King Felipe VI was forced to apologise to the King of Morocco after Spanish police mistook him for a drug dealer

The 46-year-old royal made an embarrassing plea for King Mohammed VI's forgiveness after the Spanish civil guard patrol sped towards him and his entourage as they spent the day sailing off Spain's North African enclave, Cueta.

It is believed the officers demanded information about the passengers onboard after approaching the two speed boats and three jet skis belonging to the group.

According to El Mundo, King Mohammad shouted, "Do you know who I am?", at the police who were unaware of his true identity until he removed his cap and sunglasses and the group quickly left.

He then phoned King Felipe to complain about the incident, who apologised and sent the head of Spain's Civil guard out to apologise personally, reports The Telegraph.

King Mohammed has since said that while he recognises that the officers were "only doing their job" he claims "the police did not show me respect".

King Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia visited the King in Morocco on one of their first official royal engagements last month and the palace insists the monarch still has a "very good relationship with Mohammed VI".
