Men and women appear to have polar opposite ideas of what constitutes the ideal set of lingerie according to Bluebella. Men want bows, lace, suspenders, stockings- all brightly coloured and of course a healthy flash of flesh.
Women want something simpler in muted tones with a comfort element.

As a result 76% of women would rather their partner not buy them underwear- this works out well because 63% of men are too scared to go into a lingerie shop to buy their partners underwear.

Men enjoy their partner to wear a revealing bra and skimpy underwear such as a thong, however many women prefer a fuller brief on their behind and a fuller cup for the best support.

Black, white and flesh are popular choices among women, whereas men like deep and daring colours like red.

Men also like detail on their partner’s undergarments, voting for lace, cut outs, sequins and bows. Women on the other hand prefer something simpler in order for it to sit nicely under their clothes.

It’s no surprise with films like The Graduate, that men are fascinated by the idea of stockings and suspenders, however in reality women find them to be too fiddly and would rather avoid them altogether.

The only thing that men and women agree on is that underwear should match- the bra should coordinate with the panties- thong or no thong- as long as they go together.

Surprisingly the average British women only buys five sets of underwear a year spending around £200 an in doing so don’t think about their partner’s preferences, only their own. The main focus for a woman on the hunt for lingerie is something that complements their figure and lifts and supports them in all the right places.

Many women have a special set that is stored away for their fella’s eyes only on special occasions or if they are sleeping with someone new, making them feel sexier than normal and more confident.

Bluebella founder Emily Bendell said: "From these results it seems that men associate lingerie with the delights underneath – so they like skimpy pieces, lace, sheer fabrics, plus obvious ties and bows that they can undo. Women wear it all the time – so they want to combine comfort, adaptability and performance as well as fabulous aesthetics! It's interesting that 84% of women keep a set of lingerie for special occasions and nearly all of them feel more confident when they wear it. Great lingerie gives you an inner confidence at all times - not just in the bedroom but at work or at home, or when out with friends– whenever or wherever. So why not wear it all the time?"
