If you have already bought your Valentine a gift, keep the receipt as today is the most popular day for being dumped according to IllicitEncounters.com. Red Tuesday as it's known is the most popular day for people to call it quits on their relationship. 27% have broken up with their partner on the lead up to Valentine's Day.
Spokesperson for IllicitEncounters.com, Christian Grant, explains:
"You're on the cusp of what is generally considered to be one of the most romantic and important days for any relationship, and then you realise that you don't love your partner as much as they love you, so to save yourself the embarrassment or shame of having to declare your love to someone you don't really care for, what do you do? You take the lesser of two evils and dump them."
So what is the method of choice for ending a relationship? 26% do it by text, 24% do the deed face to face and 22% do it over the phone.
13% choose Facebook, 10% fall to WhatsApp and 7% opt for Twitter which shows that instant messaging services are becoming increasingly popular for calling it a day.
Grant explains: It's not an easy thing to do [breaking up with someone] especially given the timing, so many people opt for the easiest option available, which is evidently anything that avoids face-to-face contact."
Interestingly, IllicitEncounters.com has reported a record number of members signing up to the site in the lead up to Valentine's Day.
"It's not the first time that this has happened," explains Grant. "For the thousands of people who break up, there are many who choose not to do so. Whether that's out of fear, or whether they've already paid out on an expensive weekend away in Paris, they simply grit and bear it… but that never lasts for too long.
No one is going to sit around do nothing if they're in an unhappy relationship, and sites like IllicitEncounters.com are evidently a popular alternative for those who don't dump their partner this Red Tuesday."
