| Customer Reviews: A great live DVD June 8, 2006 Mr. M. Tideswell (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After reading the customer review by the guy who thought this was a bad dvd due to it being dark, having bad sound quality and, er, not being very colourful, I have to disagree. I disagree to the most extreme extreme that one could disagree to!
br /
br /This live dvd is amazing, the darkness and lack of colour are GOOD things. The person who thought they were bad must have missed the amazing projection film playing in the background which captures the feel of the show so perfectly that you'll probably end up watching that as much as the band members. Who needs flashy flashy lights when you can be drawn so completely into the moment that watching it in a dark room you can begin to feel like you are actually there? Oh, and theres nothing wrong with the sound quality, the other guy was talking poppycock.
br /
br /The highlights of this dvd, for me, are whats the frequency kenneth, strange currencies, tongue, the amazing rendition of country feedback and the equally amazing one of let me in. The last two are fantastic examples of the projection film being used to great effect.
br /
br /The only real fault I have with this Dvd is that it was filmed over at least two nights, and you can frequently see the band's clothes changing from shot to shot, as well as occasionally something not being 100% in sync. It spoils the moment somewhat if you dwell on it, but its not really that significant a thing.
br /
br /I most highly recommend buying this DVD, and Perfect Square along with it, so you have this kind of dark moody kind of show as well as a crisp and clear depiction of what the band is like now. Oh, and its amusing to see how Peter Buck doesnt change at all in 8 years, not even his clothes.
This Show Rocks September 30, 2004 cliff (South Asia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
R.E.M. is a band that has managed to release really wonderful music over the year, and still perform live and really rock. This DVD captures one such show where the band really comes off with a bang. A must have CD for fans and non-fans alike.
Excellent live performance from 1995 November 29, 2000 Mr. Dk Hamm (Derbyshire, UK) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
This film provides a good cross section of popular REM material performed live in 1995. The current album of the time was New dventures in Hifi although the set list is not top heavy with the new songs. A good proportion of old favourites is present including The One I Love and It's The End Of The World As We Know It plus hits such as quot;Losing My Religion, Man On The Moon and Everybody Hurts. Other highlights include Michael singing falsetto on Tongue (from Monster) and a superb version of my favourite song of all time, Find the River (from Automatic for the People) with violin replacing the synthesiser of the original. The performance of the excellent Country Feedback is more intense than the original from the Out of Time album. This is an essential 90 minutes of entertainment for anyone who likes R.E.M. I would have liked a couple of hours but, hey, who's counting?
Disappointing July 30, 2004 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
Being a fan of REM I bought this DVD with high hopes that it would be a rocking show with dazzling lights and good sound. Sadly it fails on most of those grounds. The show is good, the band do their best, but I'm not sure if it's American crowds in general, but the crowd didn't seem too excited. There was little movement and minimal participation. The arena is dull and dark, leaving not alot of entertainment colour-wise, and the sound isn't at its best, pretty muffled from what I remember. I'd recommend the live DVD from Perfect Square, that was outdoors and the crowd were really up for it. But only big fans of REM would appreciate this live DVD and it could turn out to be a waste of money for those who aren't of the hardcore fan variety.
