Amazon.co.uk Review
Filmed in Quebec in 1995, this concert souvenir captures Celine Dion as she turned the corner from pop contender to platinum princess. Long a star in Canada, and a major draw throughout the Francophone world, the Québecois vocalist was still a relatively new, if increasingly successful, commodity stateside. A clutch of single hits, augmented by two big soundtrack themes, hadn't entirely erased the suspicion that Dion's career was being bolted together on an assembly line not far from Mariah Carey's--apart from frequent overlaps in production support, both singers relied on similar mixtures of sweeping ballads and crisp, uptempo dance workouts, and both were notorious for their vocal gymnastics.pIThe Colour of My Love/I works hard, as does Dion, to convince us she's already a major diva, and the approving crowd of hometown fans obviously agrees. Dion, her hair cropped in a shorter, curly "do", is equally chic in black suit or blue gown, a troupe of dancers invades for strategic uptempo pieces, and her studio duet partners for both "When I Fall in Love"(Clive Griffin) and "Beauty and the Beast" (Peabo Bryson) pop up to repeat their roles. The star attacks each song with laser-like focus, and she radiates a sense of theatrical drama.pTechnically, however, the special suffers from the kind of direction that mistakes swooping camera movement, sudden zoom shots, tilted frames and other concert video clichés for real drama. More problematic is abundant evidence of considerable post-production sweetening in the star's vocals--like other post-rock divas with arena-sized ambitions, Dion (or perhaps her producer) is apparently determined to reproduce the surreal sonic precision and scale of the records. It's a slippery slope that tempts perfectionists to leave less and less of the actual performance on the soundtrack, even though Dion's huge voice would still be impressive (and possibly more exciting) if rendered without such editorial tweaks. --ISam Sutherland, Amazon.com/I

4 out of 5 stars Celine's voice at it's best   January 21, 2001

This video was filmed in front of Celine's home crowed back in Montreal, including her mother and father, where everything started.pThis video is a great chance to see Celine peform some of her ealier hits in both English and french(Think Twice, Only one road, Where does my heart beat now). And one special moment when she sings her first ever song that her mother wrote for her when she was only twelve years old.pA must see for all true Celine fans.

I am a very big Celine Dion fan, but I have to say that this video was quite dissapointing. Most songs she sings are not live, like the faster ones or the challenging ballads like "Power of love" and "Only one Road". The good points are the song her Mother wrote for her when she was 12 which is beautiful and the song "The colour of my love". If you are a huge Celine fan then do buy, but if you want to hear her live I would suggest "Celine Dion, live in Memphis" which is all live and shows Celine at her vocal best. Its nice to watch this video, knowing that shes going to accomplish so much more in the next few years!

2 out of 5 stars Why did she have to mime??!!   February 10, 2006

I bought this recently through Amazon and got a great Deal on a used copy. I adore Celine and have many of her CD#x27;s and videos. But unfortuntely she only sings one song live (the Elvis cover near the end) which is a shame. The whole point of buying a Celine video is to catch her live performance. And goodness knows she has no problem singing live!! But I was dissapointed with this. An Cour du Stad is much better (It#x27;s all live - there isn#x27;t a backing track in sight). Celine doesn#x27;t have to mime/lip-sing so I felt cheated.

2 out of 5 stars Great potential but a very disappointing concert   June 12, 2008

This was filmed as Celine started to become the superstar that she is today and had the potential to be a good if not great concert, but it is far too staged. br / br /As other reviewers have observed, this is a very disappointing concert, the filming is annoying and you get the distinct impression that she is miming throughout - sadly one for completists only. If you like the songs on this concert, you would be better off buying `the colour of my love' cd which has nearly all of these songs, and more besides and you would be hard pushed to tell the difference (especially `refuse to dance'). If you want a good Celine concert which does not resemble something out of the BBCs I would do anything, buy `Au Coeur Du Stade' which unlike this concert you will want to watch more than once. br /

1 out of 5 stars Too disappointed !!!   July 2, 2008

I like Celine's songs, performances, voice, abilities and work at all. But, watching this concert, especially when I turned on "The beauty and the beast", the song I've heard more than 5 thousand times, I regretfully must say that I'm disappointed down to the core ! The person that I've always thought performes the best live on earth, performs that song apsolutely on play back !!! I hope there's more than the reason for that. This is too much. It was thirteen years before. I wonder what happens now when tehnical possibilities are far way improved? I hope I'm wrong.
