Amazon.co.uk Review Director Sam Raimi (IThe Evil Dead/I) tries gamely to recapture the exotic mysteries of spaghetti Westerns in this stylish but empty film, which stars Sharon Stone as a stranger who comes to the town of Redemption in time for an annual shooting contest. Her real motivations for being there are the stuff that might have found their way into a film by Sergio Leone--in fact, much of this film is a pastiche of Leone's greatest hits, including IA Fistful of Dollars/I and IOnce upon a Time in America/I--but one can't quite believe Stone in the role. Gene Hackman gives a predictably solid performance as the town tyrant, and Leonardo DiCaprio is good as a lucky young gunslinger who gets to kiss the heroine. But not even the cast can help this failed project. Raimi brings a lot of razzle-dazzle to his camera work, but it doesn't make the film any more substantial. I--Tom Keogh/I

I hate westerns, so why do i love this one? - by EML January 8, 2002 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
Blimey.brSam Raimi does it again, and makes a great movie from very poor pickings. His innovative direcorial style and creative minimalist use of SFX make this a surprising visual treat.- His cinematographer must have been working hard to get the lighting right on 99% of the shots, as most of the movie is shot outdoors. -the more money in the kitty, the more external shots.brStone isn't a strong lead, but is well supported by her co stars, Hackman, Dicaprio, and Crowe in his first Hollywood role.brThe film is typical of the nineties, i mean when have you ever seen a decent female cowboy in a mainstream Hollywood movie?- Political correctness enters the movie making arena!brAs is always the way with Raimi, good and evil battle it out, while neither side are particularly complex, it's still fun predicting the outcome.brThe slightly cliched costume choice and the (at times) cheesy dialogue do not hamper the film as much as you might think, and the steamy scene between Crowe and Stone makes it even more appealing. (Producer Stone actually put production on hold to wait for Crowe to finish filming in Oz)brMemorable for the gender role reversal, seeing a woman get tough, and most of all, the amazing clean teeth of the goodies, compared to the blacked up teeth of the baddies!
The movie was cool!!! July 27, 2001 icequeen2k1@another.com (Edinburgh, Scotland) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I don't know why I liked this film but I saw it on tv and it just blew me away, it wasn't until a few weeks later that I decided I wanted to buy but I've had trouble finding it! Its cool anyway!
One of my FAVOURITE FILMS! December 30, 2000 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is one of my favourite movies. Its exciting, tense and a definite classic. Sharon Stone is really good - dangerous AND sexy. It doesnt take itself too seriously and shows westerns in more of a comic light. Its one of those films I watch over and over again - so far ive watched it 8 times and its still good. It also has lots of stars in it in relatively minor roles. Gene Hackman + Leo dicaprio interact well and act well. Look out for Gladiator's Russell Crowe, hes one of the major characters!
surprisingly enjoyable October 23, 2007 Laura (Worksop, Nottingham) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was really expecting this film to be rubbish, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be. I was surprised by Sharon Stone, normally she isn't that convincing but in this she put in a good performance. And so did leonardo dicaprio, who's obviously very young in this. The cringeworthy parts were the actual gun fighting scenes, and the costumes! I'm sure in the wild west, people had clean, brightly coloured clothes with all the dirt and the dust that was around! is a good laugh though.
