Amazon.co.uk Review Hit man Martin Q Blank (John Cusack) is in an awkward situation. Several of them, actually. He's attending his high school reunion on an assignment; he's got a rival hit man (Dan Aykroyd) on his tail; and he's going to have to explain to his old girlfriend (Minnie Driver) why he stood her up on prom night. iGrosse Pointe Blank/i is an amiable black comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (IMiami Blues/I), has the feel of Demme's ISomething Wild/I and IMarried to the Mob/I--which is to say its humour is dark and brightly coloured at the same time. Cusack and Driver are utterly charming--as is the leading man's sister, Joan, who plays his secretary. (Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her next role, in IIn Out/i.) Alan Arkin is also very funny as Martin's psychiatrist. I--Jim Emerson/I

Darkly comic. Deeply original. Desperately funny. February 2, 2003 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
OK, so it's the tale of a hitman headed back to his high school reunion, and the body count is pretty high. But bizarrely, this is still an incredibly funny and likeable film. Much of the credit for that goes to John Cusack, who turns in a performance of pure John Cusack, which is to say his character Martin Blank is full of the self-doubt, insecurity and self-deprecation he brings to every role. There are many wonderfully constructed scenes in this film too (check out Cusack's nervy, trigger-happy breakfast meeting with rival hit man Dan Akroyd), and the running gag of Cusack telling everyone what he does for a living never tires. It's a superb supporting cast too, with Joan Cusack turning in a typically excellent performance as Martin's secretary, Minnie Driver providing necessary contrast as the very normal girl Martin stood up the night he disappeared, and of course Akroyd as the annoying would-be unioniser of hitmen. It all adds up to one of the most original films you'll ever see. I've recommended this to countless people, and they were all knocked out by it. I defy you not to love it too.
I dont see hollowpoint woundcare on the menu kid... June 26, 2001 simon.floyd@btinternet.com (Norwich, U.K.) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Quick summary: Martin Blank - Professional killer, goes to 10 year high school reunion. Tells everyone hes a professional killer, no one belives him. Especially his old girlfriend who he left waiting on prom night. Bullets, blood and a bomb later...well you'll have to find out.pI missed this at the cinema (apparently it disapeared VERY quickly) so I waited for the video. And was I disapointed by the wait. No.pA stunning cast Ackroyd, John and Joan Cusack, Minnie Driver work together perfectly in a script that had some of the main parts of it re-written (school reunion) after John Cusack attended his own and realised the the one in the script was nowhere near scary enough. ;-) pA perfect balance of comedy, violence, 80's music and love. pEveryone I persuaded to watch this video at University loved it, we even managed to clear out the local HMV of their stocks of the video. And now its on DVD, Oh happy day! I dont care about the lack of extras. Its in widescreen for the first time! This version wont wear out like my video!pBut i digress...Buy this, hell, buy 2 copies. One for you, one for a friend. Sit with a drink, the light down low, the volume up and enjoy.
Give this film a chance and it will astound you.... April 16, 2002 mark_f99@hotmail.com (South England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Well, what can i say? Very rarely can a film of this consistent quality be found. Right from the very start this will have you captivated. It has one of the most original, witty scripts I#8217;ve ever seen with some incredibly dark and intelligent comedy thrown in for good effect. brEverything about this film shines, from the perfectly set soundtrack to the brilliant directing and filming.pPlease, if there is one film you watch all year, make it Grosse Pointe Blank.
You're a handsome devil what's your name? November 5, 2001 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Wow!!! I first saw this film last year and it's one of the best films I've ever seen. It's funny, clever, romantic, fresh and has a great script. pThis film made me a John Cusack fan and after seeing this film I had to see more of him. His character Martin Blank is adorable [esp in that black suit], and is very familar to the character that made Cusack famous - Lloyd in Say Anything. Wonderful cast - Dan Ackroyd [his rival], Minnie Driver [the girl he left behind], Alan Arkin [his therapist], Jeremy Priven [his best friend] and the delightful Joan Cusack [his hilarious secretary]. pThe soundtrack itself is fantastic with some great 80's songs. All together this is a great movie which somehow is original. Though there is some violence, it doesn't take over the film. pGreat actors, great plot, great one-liners and a great soundtrack!! what more can I say
Cusak on top form October 27, 2003 Jimmy (London) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This was a film I came to late, seeing it on video. It was highly rated but did not trouble to box office overly, although that great films like this tend to go unnoticed by cinema goers comes as no surprise, it vexes me.pMartin Blank (John Cusak) is becoming increasingly troubled by his choice of career as a hit man (a fact he makes plain in an early hilarious scene with Alan Arkin as his Psychiatrist) and fate lands him a job and a High School Reunion in his hometown of Grosse Point. Thus begins one of the hippest funniest films outside of Tarantino, as once in Grosse Point he has to contend with his rival played with gusto by Dan Ackroyd who as been rarely better, two Security men, and another assassin all hell bent on killing him #8211; and not to mention a former girlfriend (Minnie Driver looking voluptuous) whom he left on the eve of prom night to go and join the army. pFrom the word go this is simply excellent, the performances of every member of the cast are spot on (especially a wonderful turn from John#8217;s sister Joan as his PA), the writing going from witty dialogue to pitch dark humour is splendid. In framing the film in a very ordinary setting (a small town in Detroit); the local high school, the Ultimart, and a local radio station it creates are marked contrast to the world in which Martin has found himself and the inherent violence that comes with it. It is this that forms the basis for much of the dark humour (Blank on going back for the re-union and having nothing in common with his former classmates; #8220;What do I say#8230;I killed the President of Paraguay with a fork?#8221;) as well as the set pieces in the Ultimart and the High School.pThis is a very well put together film, as it is rounded off with a great Eighties soundtrack with tracks like #8217;99 Red Balloons#8217; and artists like The Clash. pThe DVD edition is in widescreen, and is a very nice transfer, if you are looking for extras such as commentaries and interviews you will be disappointed, although they would have been more than welcome. It is a shame that Cusak does not lavish more care on his DVD releases as High Fidelity also lacks decent extras to provide more insight into these great films.
