"Bravo! Let Our Revels Begin!" February 3, 2007 Fergus Fingall (London) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Anyone who thinks 'The Avengers' is one of the worst movies of all time needs to get out more. Better still, they need to watch an episode of the television series on which it was based, and then they will see it is one of the best film adaptations of a cult television series ever made.

br /Ralph Fiennes is splendid as Steed ( if a little too young ), perfectly capturing the essence of the character portrayed originally by Patrick Macnee. Steed is the quintessential Englishman; well-dressed, well-mannered, witty, yet capable of swinging into action like a panther. Uma Thurman, while in no way comparable to Diana Rigg, makes a sexy and alluring Dr.Emma Peel.
br /
br /The plot has deranged scientist Sir August de Wynter blackmailing the world's governments with a weather control machine. If they do not pay up, he will condemn them to perpetual winter. Not the most original plot in the world perhaps, but perfectly serviceable. Don Macpherson's script is loaded with outrageous ideas and witty lines. The scene that seems to have upset so many people is the one where Sir August and his henchmen sit around a table wearing teddy bear suits! I do not know why it should bother anybody - had a similiar scene appeared in a 'Batman' film would anyone have objected? As Sir August, Sir Sean Connery gives a delightfully over-the-top performance, perhaps not his finest hour as an actor but in keeping with the style of the movie.

br /There's much to enjoy here, from the opening training ground scene to the fight at Wonderland Weather to the flight of the robot bumble bees to Emma trapped in an Escher-style house to the final confrontation in a London besieged by destructive weather. The important thing to remember is this - 'The Avengers' is not supposed to be taken seriously.
br /
br /Sadly, an eleventh hour reediting by the studio resulted in the movie losing much of its plot. That is why a 'Director's Cut' is so vital.

br /If you have seen the movie once and didn't care for it, try again. Believe me, it improves with each viewing. If you haven't seen it at all, ignore the negativity and watch it anyway.
Sticks to and stands up to the original Avengers principles April 6, 2009 I. Murray (Penzance, Cornwall) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very under rated, perhaps because people simply do not get the Avengers, you either do or you dont. Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman are superb and believable. The plot and acting are high camp and corny, because they are supposed to be. Brings to life a taste and feel of the sixties and British eccentricity, yet cleverly wrapped up for a more contemporary time that sadly lacks gems such as these. Another please , one day? Maybe
An excellent unappreciated film July 31, 2000 Dust 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This film failed basically for one reason, Americans couldn't understand what the actors were saying or referring to or appreciate its retro-style. It's as simple as that. The lines are classic, inuendo-laden and witty, the scenography beautiful and the acting tongue-in-cheek. The film is a visual gem and the sight of Sean Connery in a menacing teddy bear is easily worth the price of a DVD. Distilled 1960's London style and a very funny and sometimes violent script make this a future cult film.
Studio Stupidity May 19, 2007 TJ Ramsbottom (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I rewatched The Avengers today and it really is a missed opportunity. The reason it failed was not IMO the surreal wackiness, it was that Warners panicked and cut huge chunks out of the film rendering it not only surreal and weird, but missing links in the story that would have tied all the bizarre stuff together better.

br /If you look on Wikipaedia it details what was in the original script, and on imdb you can discover things cut from the film, such as the attack on the secret base by the evil Emma Peel that was seen in trailers. My favourite has to be Steed spanking Peel with his sword when they spar in the tailor shop.

br /On reflection there's a lot to like in The Avengers: Uma Thurman in leather: always a plus, Sean Connery hamming it up more than Porky Pig at a bacon factory, and henchmen dressed as multi-coloured teddy bears. Bonkers. Utter bonkers. I like it.
Time for a reappraisal? March 24, 2003 15 out of 18 found this review helpful
I admit that, when The Avengers came out in '98, I trashed it along with everyone else. But having seen it again recently for the first time since then, I wonder if I - along with everyone else - was too harsh? Okay, so there are so many things wrong with this film: Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman and Sean Connery are hoplessly miscast; and the editing renders the story nonsense. And yet, and yet... Why did I enjoy the film so much on a second viewing? Could it be that my expectations of the movie five years ago were so high (having been a huge fan of the original series)? I don't know. It just might well be one of the most unjustly underrated of all time.
