Amazon.co.uk Review Some pundits called it a flawed, exploitative action film that glamorised drug dealing and the luxury of a lucrative criminal lifestyle, spawning a trend of films that attracted youth gangs and provoked violence in cinemas. Others hailed it as a breakthrough movie that depicted drug dealers as ruthless, corrupt, and evil, leading dead-end lives that no rational youth would want to emulate. However you interpret it, INew Jack City/I is still one of the first and best films of the 1990s to crack open the underworld of cocaine and peer inside with its eyes wide open. It's also the film that established Wesley Snipes as an actor to watch, with enough charisma to bring an insidious quality of seduction to his role as coke-lord Nino Brown, and enough intelligence to portray a character deluded by his own sense of indestructible power. Director Mario Van Peebles stretched his otherwise-limited talent to bring vivid authenticity and urgency to this crime story, and subplots involving a pair of tenacious cops (Ice-T, Judd Nelson) and a recovering coke addict (Chris Rock) provide additional dramatic tension. Although some critics may hesitate to admit it, INew Jack City/I deserves mention in any serious discussion about African American filmmakers and influential films. i--Jeff Shannon/i

Watch it 3 times or more August 30, 2006 M. Halsall (leicester) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to say I thought this film was very bad when I first watched it, but I have seen it probably 10 times now in total and I think it deserves a good rating. Yes there are flaws in the acting and stereotyping and with the plot, but thats not the reason I like the film so much. New Jack City is set to such a specific time in the early 90's that it just has a such an appeal, it seems so out of date that the style is retro. The film is over the top in most ways you can imagine but again that makes it enjoyable and entertaining to watch. If you like films such as Boyz in the Hood and Menance II Society you will definately like this film. It remains a film that is very time specific, with a real inner city feel that you don't see in a lot of gangster films. A great soundtrack and one that is worth watching numerous times.

You all spout about eminem being the best, well he learnt all his tricks from Ice T and if you want just a small shred of evidence then watch this movie, It rips past so quick you will need to watch it 3 or 4 times to take in everything that happens.brJudd Nelson Chris Rock just add to the intensity that this movie brings to the viewer.brEnjoy
Life like experience October 30, 2005 New Jack City is an out of this world film. It brings you to the life of crack cocaine in 1980#x27;s New York. Wesley Snipes plays one of his best roles as Nino Brown, an notorious crime lord who turns to the biggest drug lord in New York. But you can#x27;t have a baddie without a goodie, well make that two. Ice T and Judd Nelson play reject #x27;New Jack#x27; cops Scottie Appleton and Nick Peretty who won#x27;t stop at nothing until they bring down the prize, Nino Brown. Throughout this film you see the highs and lows of New York City and how much crack is destroying the city. And believe me, if your a Wesley Snipes fan, you#x27;ll love this film.
New Jack Drug-goons April 29, 2009 EJ Macheyo (Secunda, RSA) I grew up on a staple of spaghetti westerns (Terence Hill), kung-fu (Bruce Lee Jacky Chan) and action (Bruce Willis) flicks but as a young black man growing up in Kambuzuma, Harare, Zimbabwe I did not identify myself with any ONE genre. Kine 1000 was a typical urban cinema goer's paradise.
br /Enter Wesley Snipes in 1991's New Jack City and my whole world changed. Here was a despicable villain, vicious, arrogant and totally self-serving an individual as you ever will see, yet he was charming ang very likeable at the same time. I identified with him, I hated his politics (so to speak) but in the same breath I knew a 1000 like him who corrupted nations and enriched themselves while so doing. The movie was set in America but it could have been enacted in any urban city in the world.
br /Happening, relevant and totally and brutally believable! Snipes is excellent, Allen Payne, Ice T, Judd Nelson Chris Rock not far behind this movie set the the tone for all drug related movies to follow. Brilliant movie, brilliant acting, this film turned me off drugs for life!
