Horton (UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful Cobra although it has had its critics, in my books is a very entertaining film. Fantastic to watch with some mates, and a six pack. Full of corny stallone kick ass action, which in itself is worth watching the film for. Great movie, amongst some of Stallones best work, behind Rocky and Rambo, possible is the 3rd best movie he has made. Hear the Voice of America's Sons January 9, 2009 Alistair McConnachie (Glasgow, United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful Everything about this film is "quintessential" - the pure concentrated essence - of 1980s action films. br / br /Philosophically speaking, "Cobra" seemed to be an attempt to translate Stallone's archetypal "Gods of War" characters, which he had been developing successfully to the horror of liberals, in Rocky and Rambo, onto the Mean Streets, with his new character "Cobra" - also 5 letters, although not beginning with "R". br / br /From the quintessential 80s video cover - man with big muscles and machine gun, the mirror shades, the Elvis hairstyle, the cobra on the handle of his Colt 45, which is packed into his groin...of all places (!) - the video cover definitely promises what the film delivers. br / br /If you judge a Video/DVD by the cover (as I do) you're going to get everything (and more) that you expected! br / br /From the weirdoes at the start of the film clanking axe heads together - in rhythm - in some warehouse in LA, where the Californian sun drenches its sexy sunbeams over their bizarre behaviour. br / br /From the entrance of Cobra himself, in the supermarket parking lot, out of his utterly original ZZ-Top-style wagon - boots hitting the pavement menacingly, while the camera pans up to his lips chewing a matchstick (!) and his eyes, hidden by mirror shades which reflect the window of his savage soul back into the eyes of we, the enthusiastic voyeurs of the coming bloody chaos he is about to wreck. br / br /From Bridget Neilson writhing erotically, and utterly gratuitously, while scantily-clad, to the superlative "Angel of the City" ("are you watching over me? Tell me where can you be?") song which accompanies her provocative display. br / br /This film is perfectly set and photographed - artistic even! br / br /Of course, you can look on this blatant machismo cynically and ironically and laugh in a post-modern sense - or you can take it seriously (as I do) and just go "Whoa! This film is super-coooool!" br / br /And what about the car chase? br / br /To my knowledge, this was the first film to ever have a vehicle screech a handbrake turn in the middle of the highway, drive backwards in order to fire a weapon at its pursuers, and then reverse back around again to drive off. It was also the only film in the history of the world to have a car like Cobra drives in the first place! What an amazing looking vehicle - was it built especially for this film? br / br /And what about slapping the punks around when he parks his car down on the waterfront - Malibu Beach? Super-cool place to live, by the way! That scene is so funny! br / br /Everything about this film is great. Did I already say that? br / br /By the way, did I mention that the gorgeous Bridget Neilson is in this film? The soundtrack is also one of the best of the 1980s and includes John Cafferty's "Voice of America's Sons" which is played as Cobra and Bridget Neilson ride off on a Harley along one of those amazingly long, well maintained and totally quiet roads which you only get in the USA...riding off to what...we know not...other than that it is likely to be very exciting! br / br /In conclusion: I will point out that the makers of Terminator 2 may have been influenced by the final scene of this film. The similarity to Cobra's final scene was the first thing which I thought about during the final scenes of T2 - which incidentally joins Cobra as one of the greatest action adventure films of all time. br / br /Surprisingly, Cobra never had a follow-up - perhaps now is the time? br / br /Stallone has recently resurrected both Rocky and Rambo. I mean come on have we ever been entertained more in a boxing classic other then the rocky's? Or have we ever had the pleasure to have been given an all time classic such as Rambo, Copland, Lockup, lets not forget the famous 80's classic Cobra. Yes this movie can be classed as "cheesy" but come on it's the 80's for crying out loud, everything in the 80's was cheesy was it not? This film for me had everything in it: from action,suspense to top car racing scenes shoot outs scenes, also a fantastic soundtrack to go with it. July 30, 2004 7 out of 9 found this review helpful The thing i love about Stallone films is that you don't have to think about them very much. You can just sit back and watch some corny, kick-ass action. brI ordered Cobra part-way through the summer holidays when there was nowt much to do. From the very first scene i knew i would love it. The bad guy walking through the supermarket is a class scene and it all takes off after that. brI found myself laughing at some points at Sylvester stallone trying to look like what i can only describe as Elvis with muscles (why wasn't that the title of the movie?). His shades, that jacket, them pants and that hair is seriously uncool, unless ofcourse you are a famous rock legend from the fifties but somehow Stallone just manages to pull it off. brYou won't care about that anyway when he starts fighting with axe carrying lunatics. The ending is very cool when he's fighting the bad guys on motorbikes. brSo this is not Stallones best and is not an epic movie in any way, but who cares, just get a few cans in, turn the lights off (as well as your brain) and watch some serious ass-kicking, stallone style! From start to end this makes no sense what-so-ever! Cobra (Stallone) is one of the most shallow ludicrous characters ever created outside of pantomime! Cobras entrance into the film as we see him for the first time is legendary! Cobra makes Dirty Harry look like your friendly neighbour hood bobby! Most of the people he comes across in the film either get shot to death, beaten-up or at the very least completely disregarded with an icey coldness that would make your bank manager look like your best mate! br / br /As for the plot ...... well, there isn't much of a plot - A crazed, murdering axe wielding biker gang who seem to follow a strange kind of demonic cult (well, i couldn't work out what the hell was going on here anyway!), for some unkown reason, take a dislike to poor old Bridgette Nielson. Of course it's down to Cobra to save the day protect her from these lunatics by executing everyone of them! Cobra has no time for law, order justice anymore than the criminals do swiftly deals out his own brand of justice to all sundry with a rather nifty looking semi-automatic weapon! God help any innocents that get in the way! br / br /You have to see this film. I don't think I've laughed so much in ages this was helped by Stallone appearing to be playing the character quite seriously! Never more so when he delivers the now infamous line 'Crimes a cancer I'm the cure' before blowing away unfortunate bad guy who obviously didn't take that line as seriously as it was delivered!
