Amazon.co.uk Review
Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit IGood Will Hunting/I triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (IMy Own Private Idaho/I, IDrugstore Cowboy/I) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that's relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women's melodrama in the 1930s and 40s: He's crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom.p Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet maths genius who ignores his gift in favour of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus problem scribbled on a hallway blackboard and reluctantly becomes the prodigy of an arrogant MIT professor (Stellan Skarsgård). Damon only avoids prison by agreeing to see psychiatrists, all of whom he mocks or psychologically destroys until he meets his match in the professor's former childhood friend, played by Williams. Both doctor and patient are haunted by the past and, as mutual respect develops, the healing process begins. The film's beauty lies not with grand climaxes, but with small, quiet moments. Scenes such as Affleck's clumsy pep talk to Damon while they drink beer after work, or any number of therapy session between Williams and Damon offer poignant looks at the awkward ways men show affection and feeling for one another. The basic story of this film (Written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck surprisingly) centres around the life of Will Hunting (brilliantly played by Matt Damon) pWill Hunting is a closet maths genius who ignores his gift in favour of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). I was so shocked to find out that this masterful story was written by Damon and Affleck as I had no idea that they had such writing talent to go along side their huge acting talents which are also shown to the full in this film.pRobin Williams is superb as Will's psychologist as he endevours to help Will deal with a troubled and violent past that is preventing him from achieving his full potential both academically and emotionally.pBrilliant performances all round in this emtional. tragic and sometimes very funny film, that will tug at every heart-string.pA must see that is powerful and moving.pExcellent!

This film tells the story of a prodigal maths genius played by Matt Damon. Underneath his stony, boyish figure, lies a troubled, perturbed young man. This film is wonderful. Performances by both Matt Damon and Robin Williams are outstanding. In my opinion a great film that leaves the viewer feeling satisfied. Definately a must see!

I would love to sit here for hours waxing lyrical about the plot of this fantastic film and why it is by far and away my favourite film of all time but I won't. Suffice it to say there is not one single wasted word in this film. The script is immaculate and the performances too. If you haven't seen this film, please please do. An inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars I'll fake it through the day with some help from Johnny Walker Red...   October 10, 2006

A truly beautiful film...ironically enough, very few of the cast I tend rate in many of their other films yet something about this film seems to bring out the very best in all of them...there isn't anything about this film I don't love...the scene in the bar ("at least I won't be unoriginal") is so inspirational...the ending twists in a way that saves the film from the disappointing climax that so many make the mistake of...and I will love Gus Van Saant forever for bringing Elliott Smith's music to a mass audience without compromising it...Elliott's music makes the film even more beautiful, it fits the scenes perfectly, especially impressive when considering that all 8 tracks, except for the heartbreaking Oscar nominated 'Miss Misery', were existing album tracks...go buy this film...and the soundtrack...you won't regret it for a moment.

This is one of my favourite films, the music, the acting, the scenery, all spot on. The scene where Robin Williams is on the park bench, with Matt Damon, in front of the pond, has to be the best. You dont know about real loss, because it only occurs when you lose something you love, more than you love yourself One of, if not the, favourite film ever. Make a point of watching it.
